How to Remove Your Cake Topper from the Backing Board Without Damage

Posted by Gabby on 18th Mar 2025

So, you’ve just received your gorgeous Little Dance cake topper – exciting! But before you pop it on your cake, there’s one little challenge: removing it from the backing board without damage.

We use sticky dots instead of tape to keep your cake topper securely in place during shipping. Unlike tape, which can loosen and allow the topper to sway back and forth, sticky dots hold firm, preventing movement and reducing the risk of breakages.

Luckily, removing your topper is super easy with the right technique – and we’ll show you exactly how!

Why Do We Use Sticky Dots Instead of Tape?

We want your topper to arrive perfectly intact, ready to steal the show on your cake! Here’s why we choose sticky dots over tape for shipping:

Prevents movement in transit – Sticky dots keep the topper firmly in place so it doesn’t shift around inside the package.
Minimises breakage risk – Tape can loosen during transit, letting the topper sway from side to side, which increases the chance of damage.
Easy to remove – Our sticky dots hold strong but release easily with a simple twisting motion (more on that below!).

Now that you know why we use them, here’s the best way to remove your topper safely.

Two Easy Ways to Remove Your Cake Topper

What you’ll need: Just your hands and a flat surface!

Method 1: The Twisting Motion (Best for Most Toppers)

1️⃣ Lay your topper flat – Place the backing board on a table or countertop.
2️⃣ Find the sticky dots – These are the small adhesive dots holding your topper in place.
3️⃣ Use a gentle twisting motion – Place your fingers on or near the sticky dots and twist like you’re turning the hands of a clock.
4️⃣ Watch the adhesive release – This simple motion helps break the adhesive bond without putting stress on the topper.
5️⃣ Lift carefully – Once the sticky dots have loosened, gently lift your topper off the board.

That’s it – you’re ready to decorate!

Method 2: Tearing the Backing Board (Great for Extra Delicate Toppers)

If your cake topper iss thin or delicate, we recommend this method instead:

1️⃣ Tear the backing card away from the topper, piece by piece – Start from the edges and slowly peel or tear the cardboard away from the sticky dots.
2️⃣ Lift the topper only when fully released – This prevents any risk of bending or snapping the spike.

Why this works: Instead of pulling the topper off the board (which can cause stress on thin areas), removing the backing card first takes the pressure off your topper!

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Don’t pull straight up – This can put too much pressure on delicate areas, especially the spike.
Avoid using sharp tools – Knives or scissors could damage the edges of your topper.
Don’t bend the topper – Twisting or tearing the backing board is the safest way to loosen the sticky dots.
